Behind the Glitters
Lu Yong, a Sichuan peasant native, left
his home town in 1991 and started his "factory
worker's life" in Guangdong Province.
He work3ed as a gemstone cutter in a Hong
Kong-invested factory called Lucky Gems
and Jewellery Ltd. In June 1997, the factory
was relocated from Shenzhen to Huizhou.
Lucontinued his work in the new factory
site in Huizhou City until 2000. During
the 9 years, the working condition was not
concerned by yhe management. He had to work
for 12 hours per day with only inferior
facemask provided as protection. The work
place had inadequate ventilation system
and there was no medical check-up or health
and safety training provided forworkers
at all.
In 2000, Lu left the factory to go back
to his home in Sichuan. After he went backhome,
he found his health deterioriating. In 2003,
he found that he had contracted silicosis
at the second stage, incapacitated of all
working ability.
In 2003, he filed a litigation case against
his employer for sekking compensation. He
finally received a on-off modest compensation
of RMB127,000.
He went back to Sichuan and lived his final
days with his family. Died of silicosis,
Lu passed away in September 2006 at a young
age of 34, leaving behind his two children
and his wife.
