Victims

Scene 1

For the well-being of their families and children,
workers in their thirties toil to make a living.
But afflicted with silicosis, they lost the ability to work.
They resorted to legal process to seek compensation from Hong Kong employers
But the only answer is waiting.
So they decided to come to Hong Kong and find out their boss.

Going to Hong Kong, we have Deng Wenping's wife
How do I call you?
......Tang Manzhen
Manzhen and both of you will come, right?
And also Yu Dashu, Wu Guojun and Feng Xingzhong
Liu Sanhui will come later after receiving the visa

Scene 2

In this way, we have to call police, they are coming
We have called police, yes.......
We are asking Mr. Chi to come out and talk with workers
They worked for Mr. Chi's factories and demanded for compensation.

Today we go on with an aim
We have some Perfect Gem Factory workers here in Hong Kong
They ask to see their boss Mr. Chi Chaoming
in a pursuit of compensation for their occupational disease.

Down to Perfect Gem!
Down to Perfect Gem!
Chi Chaoming, come out!
Chi Chaoming, come out!
Compensation NOW! Compensation NOW!
No sweatshop!
No sweatshop!
Chi Chaoming, compensation NOW!
Compensation NOW! Compensation NOW!

I don't know them.
You don't know?
Your boss did not do any protective measures,
causing the workers to suffer from silicosis
Don't you know it?

I did gemstone cutting in Perfect Gem Factory
The working conditions were extremely poor
We are exposed to heavy dust, without protective gear
Only one face mask was provided every three days.

Here are some workers from your factory
They wanted to see you
If you think we are here to make trouble
Then we are at odds to talk

He did nothing to harm you.
He didn't harm me? Then why he hides up?
You chose to do this job, nobody forced you.
Why your boss refused to see us?
It's not my business.

Don't talk this anymore.
Thing has happened and we have to tackle it.
We have so many people here, the police and the protesters.
So don't talk in this way, ok?
But do you have any solutions? The talk is blown off.
(Stay calm) I mean we can't talk with each other.
Our boss has promised to meet them in mainland China.
But they are still sticking in here.......so what can we do?
He didn't promise us.
I said if I make a call to my boss now
Then everybody can hear
(Okay, call him now).

They said one month
It's too.......how to say....
they are too mean indeed......only RMB50,000
For Wenzhou case a few years ago, victims were paid RMB400,000.
Chi Chaoming only promised RMB100,000 but RMB10,000 were deducted.
They actually got RMB90,000 only.
It came quickly to use up such a little amount.
The wrong side is on your company, isn't it?

It happened before.
We had this kind of incident in our industry long time ago.
So it's the time to stop it.
I know, but......
Two months ago,
47 workers from Lucky Gem owned by Wong Shing Wah were found having silicosis
We know there are only five confirmed cases in your factory
It's not that serious.
Mr. Wong has spent a year to work out the problem
He gave compensation to victims.
But five workers got no penny.
So they turned to fight in Hong Kong
Mr. Wong then paid an extra RMB700,000
to settle the problem
We think that other Hong Kong companies should face the problem
Not only yours, we found six other Hong Kong companies
having this kind of problem
I think more will be discovered.
We just want to solve the problem as soon as possible.
It's not worth to drive us to protest at every jewelry trade fair.
We did it for three or four times
We've also been to Basel in Switzerland to stage protest
Yee On and Universal was also there
I talked to your boss once in the phone
he said......

Scene 3

Did anyone tell you any work danger before?
No
My teachers never tell me about this.

Scene 4

Hi Mr. Chi
Where are you in Huizhou?
Who are you?
I am Yu Dashu.
(We are in ......)
I am in Hong Kong.
Tell him your request
............
............
We want to meet you in Hong Kong.
(It's better in Huizhou)
Mr. Chi, I am Deng Wenping's wife.
Where will you be back to Hong Kong?
Not decided yet.
I prefer meeting in Huizhou, you can pick any place you want
When can we meet?
I suppose July 1.
July 1? We can't wait till then.
Come and see in Hong Kong
............

It only takes 2 or 3 hours to Hong Kong
If you don't come, we won't leave the office
We don't care. Our days are numbered.
Then I have no way to deal with it.
You have no way? Neither do I!
We won't leave!
So how's the situation of Deng Wenping?
You can see the face of Deng clearly, right?
He has to carry the oxygen mask all the time
He cannot afford to stay in hospital
It costs at least tens of thousand dollars a month
Your compensation can scarcely support us
The factory manager even deducted the sum

No camera! Okay?
............

Mr. Chi Chaoming only promised to meet
in Xiaojin Village in Luoyang County.

Scene 5

We have 70 to 80 workers
squeezing in a workshop
The environment was so dusty
that we were even unable to recognize anybody
in the opposite corner
The great deal of dust is as much as
a rush of sand soaring aloft when vehicles pass by.

Every time when the boss came to the factory,
he shunned our workshop and only stood at the doorside.
We were exposed to heavy dust
but only offered with a new face mask every 3 or 5 days.
Sometimes they lashed out at us when we asked for more
The manager said, "You can wash your mask!"
He said the mask could be reused after cleansing.
But the mask was bad in quality and very thin
Today we use this side and put it away
then next day we don't know which side had been used
Because we used one mask for three days and it became out of shape
We got itching nose
The dust is poisonous
Our hands were torn in skin
We were diagnosed of having a disease
but they never told us what actually it is
At that time, the boss' younger brother, who took charge of the factory,
said it might be tuberculosis
He said, "I give you sick leave, go home and take rest."
After 4 or 5 months since we'd left for home,
the factory was removed to another place
He tried to escape from responsibility.
We had taken the drug for more than a year without any good signs of healing
But the doctor kept prescribing that to us
The drug is for tuberculosis
We went to ask the doctor
"We have taken this for one more year, why aren't we healed up?"
Then he asked about our job
We told him, "We work in a gemstone factory."
He asked us how many years we had worked in the factory
Then I told him
Later he suggested us to have a check in the provincial Sichuan Hospital,
a very authoritative one
After the check-up,
The doctor told us we did not contract tuberculosis
To our astonishment,
he told us we got silicosis

At first, we hoped to use legal means to
strive for justice and fight back our compensation
But the local government sheltered and protected the boss
Because Haifeng is his hometown
He immigrated to Hong Kong illegally in the 50's.
He has two younger brothers in Haifeng
They are all locals.
During 50's, he used illegal ways to move to Hong Kong
When we entered the factory in early days,
there were only 50 more workers
In those days, he counted on us to help him make money
We were simpleminded at that time
(you trust him, is it true?)
Yes. We toiled very hard.
Every time when he came to the factory,
he wheedled us by saying,
"Work hard, folks. I also had a rough time when I first came to Hong Kong."
He told us his past experience.
We had worked for him for eight years
But most of the time we couldn't see him.
The factory was mainly run by his younger brother
But we know our boss quite well
He came to visit us in the past.
And we had worked in the factory for 7 or 8 years.
So we know him quite well.
If we see face to face now, I can certainly (recognize him)......

Scene 6

We take a long journey. What we seek is DIGNITY.

Against Ko Ngar Gems Factory!
Against Ko Ngar Gems Factory!
Protect labour rights!
Protect labour rights!
Life is everything!

Ko Ngar said they would receive the petition letter
But I said we don't mean to simply give him a letter.
Instead, we want him to assure us a meeting.
I told him (the staff) to ring his boss right away
But he refused. He is now seeking senior advice.

Irresponsible!
Ko Ngar, shame on you!
Wong Siu Yik, shame on you!
Wong Siu Yik, come out! No sweatshop!
No sweatshop!

We try to reach Mr. Wong, see if we can find him.
The staff was saying his boss would give us a phone call.
But I didn't receive any response yet.
Now the jewellery trade association chairman steps in
We give him five minutes
We quite down and give him time to dig out the boss.
If he fails to do so, don't blame us.
Don't say we give him no chance.
We give him five minutes
We also take a break
and wait for his reply.
Ok, let's sit down and have a break.
(5 minutes later)
We need to take care for the worker victims and their families.
We can't wait any longer.
We have given him enough time.
Let's stand up.

Come with me and leave here please.
Come with me and leave here please.
Please leave here first.
Come with me and leave here please.
If you were me, you would feel like me, right?
I know, but your organization is over there.
Can you come with me and leave here now?
Can you come with me and leave here now?
Do you understand my feelings?
I understand. I understand.
Then why are you trying to seize my thing?
Madame, if you insist like this, I'll move you to downstairs.
I tell you now
If you don't cooperate, I'll move you.
Sorry, I can't understand you.
When we worked in the factory,
the boss blocked up all the windows
and gave us no protection.
When the workers were found having disease,
he dumped us.
He just wanted to cover up the problem
He told us to make our own survival.
Over 80 workers were packed in a workshop.
It is poorly ventilated and equipped.
He only cares for profits, totally indifferent to our life and death.
Workers lost their lives. Only 35 years old.
Can we allow him to die in vain?
Can we have this villainous boss?
Now you stop me
I am desperately at a loss
"I am rich. I can buy the government."
"You are useless. Just drop dead!"
Our boss talked and treated us like this.
We can't help but can only come here to find our boss.
We have no way to turn to
So when you come and stop me,
I feel deep pain in my heart.
My daughter was over there
My girl was good at studies.
But now she can't go to school anymore
The teacher went straight to our home and asked,
"Why she stops going to school?"
I said we had no money
I told the school our situation
My daughter was therefore exempt from tuition fees for one year
But now they don't let her study anymore
Do you know how unbearable pain it is?
When my husband worked for the factory,
he weighted 70 kg
but now he only weights 50 kg
Do you know how unbearable pain it is?
How come you don't let me in to see my boss?
We did try to find him
But he bluffed us, "Go on! I dare you to do it."
How can he treat us like this?
"Come to Hong Kong! I dare you!"
I have no alternative. I can only come here to find my boss.
But now you don't let me in!
He is inside. We must get in.
Why not allow us to go in?
You are making mischief here
..........
..........
Madame, shall we go down first? Calm down please.

You must leave here.
When it comes to deal, they go, I go
Otherwise, I won't go
I don't mean to make you trouble, right?
I know. I don't want to hurt you either.
The boss treated us that face
I treat him the same
I ain't afraid
He is a shameless person. We are nobody.
His name and life is certainly more critical than us
He has his might. So do us. He provoked us to seek after him.
He said, "Can you manage to do it?"
We are powerless people. But we managed to come here this time.
We want to see him
I won't leave here

Would you please get away from here?
Get away please
If they come to talks, they go, I go.
Otherwise, I won't go.
Once they leave, I leave on my own.
Can you put down the cardboard? Listen to me please.
I won't put it down.
The boss has his power.
We tried hard to look for our boss.
We had been struggling with the law for three years.
The boss said, "I would rather pay officials than pay you."
"I dare you to come to Hong Kong."
"Go ahead if you can," he said.
We've endured three years of legal proceedings.

Mr. Wong Siu Yik refused to show up at the meeting
But he appointed the manager of Ko Ngai in Haifeng
to discuss the compensation issue with the workers
